Can groups be monetized?
Maybe we need to look at how would monetize a group. As far as I can tell, there are 2 ways to look at monetization: Joining a Group and
Posts in the Group.
One could pay to "Join a Group" for 2 reasons:
Belong to the group
Be able to send Free messages to the Group members on LinkedIn
Paying for posts in a Group would be somewhat going into a grey zone of legality and discourage members from posting if they want visibility for their posts.
So the simple answer to the question is YES, MAYBE, and NO depending on how you look at it.
YES
One way to monetize a Group is to connect it to a product (eg a book) or service and include the membership fee as part of your sale of the product or service!
The way it works is that someone buys your product and then gets invited to a private /unlisted Group. I have seen cases of this practice at work.
MAYBE
An interesting approach to monetize a Group would be that people would pay to get their post “Recommended by the admin”. This would ensure, of course, that the post gets more visibility than any other posts in the group but as most people never visit Groups they would not see that “Recommended” post.
The sponsor can not know how many people his/her/their post reaches as there are impression or view stats per post. A risk bet I would say.
Another practice that I can think of is paying for performance. I mean is when posts are gated and posted in the Group, the author would pay a fee for every engagement (Like or Comment) on that post. This approach would provide a non-negotiable basis for both buyer and seller as
the engagement is posted under the post. I have not seen any proof of this practice so far.
NO
Finally, most people are not willing to spend any money on Groups. Some even think it is counter-productive and will make Groups even less attractive provided they are of course.
A large number of people feel that Groups are no longer providing value. So these people see Groups as “Ghost towns” where nothing is happening this day other than people touting their own horn.
Some other people pointed out that monetizing your Group is against the LinkedIn Service of Terms and thus illegal (See ToS 8.2.11: "Rent,
lease, loan, trade, sell/re-sell or otherwise monetize the Services or related data or access to the same, without LinkedIn’s consent"
